These are the must-have products for coloured hair

We all know how expensive it is to colour your hair, not to mention the maintenance as well. And unfortunately, as much as we love summer, the sun can strip your hair of its hard-earned colour. Not to fear though, there are a few things you can put in place to help prolong and protect your locks.

We can see the toll that harsh UVA and UVB rays take on our skin but we often don’t think about what it can do to our hair. That being said, whether it’s sunny or not, those of us with coloured hair are on a constant hunt to keep that colour locked in for as long as possible.

Here’s a routine we’ve put together to save your colour.

Get a good shampoo & conditioner

A few of our blogs have started with this. A lot of people are under the belief that the less they wash their hair, the longer the colour will stay. It’s not untrue but you’re also probably using the wrong ones as well. We wrote about the benefits of SLS-free shampoo and conditioner, and we’re standing by it. Like we said, even though SLS isn’t really too harmful, it can take the cleaning too far and strip your hair. Try a combination like the Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and its conditioner counterpart for a good hair washing time.

Treat yo self - and your hair - with a hair mask

There’s nothing quite as luxe as a hair mask, and they’re really good for your hair as well. A good mask should repair and provide further conditioning, making your hair super soft and prevent the adverse effects of coloured hair such as split ends, breakages and dryness.

The Kevin Murphy Angel.Masque has been designed with dry and coloured in in mind - pumping quinoa proteins and tripeptides into your hair to restore and strengthen. Simply apply it after you’ve washed your hair with your new shampoo and conditioner, massage it in and leave it for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it out.

For those who really just can’t find the time to apply and rinse, you can opt for a leave-in version like this luxe Kevin Murphy Young.Again treatment oil. It prevents oxidisation and protects it from heat and environmental factors. Just apply it to freshly washed hair before any styling products, and you’re good to go.

Lock it in

Another hair treatment in the routine we hear you say? But trust us on this one. The Davroe Colour Lock-In Spray will do wonders for your colour. It’s a leave-in that will nourish your hair but also protect from colour fade. Being completely vegan and paraben-free, it uses rice amino acids to enrich your hair with all the good proteins and consequently locking in colour and protecting it from colour fade as well as pollution and UV damage. Miracle product? Yes, yes it is. Simply spritz evenly into your hair and go!

Hair toner is the key, blondies.

And finally, this colour game is even harder if you’re trying to maintain the perfect blonde. There’s nothing worse than brassy yellow hair when what you’re really trying to achieve is the perfect golden (or icy) blonde. In this case, a good silver toner will save your hair (and life). Products like the Nak Blonde Plus Toning Foam or the Vitafive CPR Serious Blonde Instant Toner refresh blonde colours and neutralise any unwanted warmth.
