Spring Cleaning Your Beauty Routine: The Ultimate Beauty Cabinet Refresh
Spring has officially entered the chat and while you might be ready to clean out the wardrobe, reorganise the kitchen cupboard and finally deal with that drawer, there’s one spot that deserves a little extra attention: your beauty routine.
Between half-used hair masks, makeup brushes that haven’t seen soap in… a while and skincare products we were definitely going to finish, our beauty collections can get cluttered surprisingly quickly.
So, consider this your sign to give your makeup, skincare and haircare routine a spring clean. Clear some space, clean your tools and rediscover the products hiding at the back of your bathroom cabinet.
Alexa, play Man! I Feel Like a Woman! - we’ve got cleaning to do.
1. Start With the Great Beauty Cabinet Declutter
First things first: take everything out.
Yes, everything.
Empty your bathroom cabinet, beauty drawers, makeup bags and shower shelves so you can actually see what you’re working with. You may be shocked by how many products have been quietly multiplying back there.
Now sort everything into three categories: keep, toss and reconsider.
Check your products for expiry dates and look for any noticeable changes in smell, texture, colour or consistency. If something seems a little questionable, it might be time to say goodbye.
This is also your opportunity to be realistic. That moisturiser you tried twice and haven’t touched in eight months? The lipstick shade you keep insisting you’ll wear one day? The hair product that just doesn’t work for you?
Thank them for their service and move on.
A streamlined beauty collection makes it much easier to see - and actually use - the products you love.

2. Give Your Makeup Brushes a Bath
Be honest… when did you last clean your makeup brushes?
If you had to think about it, they’re probably due for a wash.
Your makeup brushes and beauty sponges regularly come into contact with makeup, oils and your skin, so keeping them clean should be an important part of your beauty routine.
Use a dedicated brush cleanser or gentle soap with lukewarm water, taking care not to completely soak the base of the bristles. Massage the product through, rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess water.
Then reshape the bristles and leave your brushes lying flat to dry.
And voilà! Fluffy, fresh brushes ready for your next glam.
While you’re there, wipe down your makeup bag, brush holders and the products themselves. Because somehow every foundation bottle eventually ends up wearing its own foundation.

3. Audit Your Skincare Routine
Spring is the perfect excuse to check in with your skincare routine.
Start by looking at what you’re actually using. If your routine has slowly grown into a 14-step event every night, consider whether every product is earning its place.
Go back to your essentials and build from there.
A cleanser, moisturiser and daily SPF are great staples, with serums, exfoliants, masks and other treatments added depending on your skin and its needs.
It’s also worth remembering that your skin can feel different as the seasons change. Products you loved during the cooler months might feel heavier as the weather warms up, so spring can be a great time to reassess your textures and formulas.
And yes, SPF is still invited. Every. Single. Day.

4. Spring Clean Your Haircare Shelf
Your haircare deserves some spring cleaning love too.
Pull everything out of the shower and take stock of what you actually use. Five almost-empty shampoo bottles? Three hair masks open at once? A styling cream you forgot existed?
We’ve all been there.
Once you’ve decluttered, think about what your hair currently needs. Your haircare routine should suit your hair type, texture and concerns rather than simply following whatever is trending.
Dry strands might be craving hydration. Fine hair may benefit from lightweight formulas and volume. Curly hair might need products focused on moisture and definition, while coloured or damaged hair may appreciate some extra repair and protection.
And don’t forget your scalp! If product build-up, oil and dry shampoo are regular features of your routine, consider adding a scalp scrub or clarifying shampoo when appropriate for your hair and scalp.
Fresh season, fresh scalp, fabulous hair.
5. Clean the Things You Forget to Clean
We’re looking at you, hairbrush.
Take a minute to remove trapped hair from your brushes and combs before giving washable tools an appropriate clean according to their material and care instructions.
While you’re in cleaning mode, think about the other beauty items you regularly touch: hair clips, reusable accessories, makeup organisers and even the shelves where your products live.
And when was the last time you wiped down your hair styling tools?
Make sure heated tools are switched off, unplugged and completely cool before cleaning them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
It’s not glamorous, but future you will be very pleased.

6. Reorganise Your Beauty Products
Now comes the satisfying part: putting everything back.
Instead of hiding products wherever they fit, organise your beauty collection in a way that makes sense for your routine.
Keep everyday essentials somewhere easy to reach and group similar products together - skincare with skincare, haircare with haircare and makeup with makeup.
You could even create a little “use me first” section for products you want to finish before opening something new.
Because apparently buying another shampoo when you already have four at home is frowned upon. Who knew?
Your Beauty Routine Is Officially Spring Ready
And just like that, your spring beauty clean is complete.
Your makeup brushes are fluffy, your beauty cabinet can close without something falling out, your haircare shelf has room to breathe and those mysterious products from 2022 have finally left the building.
Spring cleaning your beauty routine isn’t about throwing everything away and starting again. It’s about taking stock of what you own, keeping your beauty tools clean and making sure your skincare, makeup and haircare routines are filled with products you genuinely enjoy using.
Now there’s only one thing left to do…
